One year after the release of “All I Was“, and after a busy year in which we followed the Tremonti Project, we talked in exclusive with Garrett Whitlock, drummer of the project that is today loved by fans from all over the world! Enjoy! 🙂
MARK TREMONTI ITALIA: One year already passed since the release of “All I Was”. What did you enjoy most and how have you lived the Tremonti Project experience?
GARRETT WHITLOCK: Wow… It’s crazy to think it’s already been a year! Everything about this project has been a blast. From writing to touring & everything in between. We all just goof off, have fun, & most importantly we just love playing the songs.
MTI: Can we expect a second Tremonti album next year? If yes, what can you tell us about it? We can’t wait!
GW: When the time is right… I am sure we will do another record. I think we were all blown away by the support we received this time around. Personally I cannot wait to get things progressing, but with everyone’s schedule it gets kinda hectic.
MTI: What artists are you working with right now? Can you tell us something about these projects and how fans can support them?
GW: I try to stay as busy as possible. I am splitting my time between playing with Robert Fortune (Blues/Rock n Roll), Chris Green (Progressive/Metal) & also Eric & I are working with a singer named Melissa Burnos on some tunes.
MTI: All the Italian Tremonti fans got passionate about your drumming style and the power you show when playing live. What advice can you give to those who wish to start play drums?
GW: It’s easy to get discouraged in the beginning. Keep your head up & stay focused, purchase a metronome & lock yourself in your room with a few AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top & Pantera records. That will pretty much teach you everything you need to know… At least it worked for me. 🙂
MTI: What are your main musical influences?
GW: Oh wow… I could go on forever. Band wise… Pantera, Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders, Strapping Young Lad, Gojira, Karnivool, Nine Inch Nails, The Melvins, Motorhead, Sepultura… But I also really dig stuff like James Brown, Hank Williams, & Tom Waits. At the end of the day… I love music.
MTI: Which is your favourite song to play live?
GW: Without sounding corny… I love playing them all. But if I had to pick one… “Brains”.
MTI: Considering your career since Submersed up to today, how did your style and technique evolve?
GW: Submersed was a very “controlled” situation… The label (Wind-Up Records) had a deathgrip on the band as far as what they wanted us to “sound like”. There was always “You guys can’t do that… That’s not what’s selling”. Ultimately it’s what destroyed the band. So when Tremonti came to fruition… It was like a blank canvas. We were capable of doing whatever we felt was necessary for the song. It was a pretty liberating feeling to have control over the songs you wrote.
MTI: Can you tell us the funniest moment of the life on tour with Mark, Erock and Wolfie? And the most memorable one?
GW: We are always cutting up & joking around. Wolfie is extremely terrified of spiders, so you can guess we put him through hell with that. 🙂 Eric fell asleep in the back lounge of the bus one night… Wolfie & I sharpied the hell out of his feet, it wouldn’t wash off for months. I take full credit for that one haha.
MTI: What did amaze you most of the Italian public?
GW: Genuine people. Amazing food. You guys have a love for rock n roll that’s second to none. The love we get from the Italian fans is felt that’s for sure.
MTI: Can you please leave a message for your Italian fans?
GW: Mark, Eric, Wolfie & I can’t thank you guys enough for your unbridled support. Thanks for making the record & shows an incredible time. We all cannot wait to make it back over that way again soon!!!! Cheers.
A huge thank you to Garrett for his kindness and availability, and for the support to our website! 🙂
